The US Pan Asian American Chamber of Commerce Education Foundation (USPAACC) National, with the assistance of USPAACC South East Regional Chapter, today conducted a focus group of South Asian American businesses in Insurance, Manufacturing, Media, Legal Services, Web Services, Information Technology, Supply Chain Management, and Natural Resource Conservation. This is one of 13 meetings held nationwide as a part of a pioneering study of Asian American businesses in the six largest Asian American ethnic groups in the country: Chinese, Filipino, Asian Indian, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese. It is intended to provide a better understanding of the challenges, needs, anticipations, expectations and aspirations of the Asian American business community.

The result of the focus group meeting will be a part of a study to be published and distributed nationwide. It will provide mainstream American corporations, government agencies and other organizations a better understanding of the dynamics of the diverse Asian American business community; and further highlight the contributions Asian Americans have made toward the vitality of the country by showcasing them to a wider public.

San Jose, CA | October 25, 2011
San Jose, CA, October 26, 2011 – The ‘Asian American Business, Corporation and Government Agency of the Year Awards’ were presented last night at the Wyndham Hotel in San Jose, California immediately after the Procurement Connections event earlier in the day. Hosted by USPAACC West, the events were attended by over 150 Asian American businesses from a variety of industries, Fortune 500 companies and government officials from federal, state, and local levels.
Asian American Business of the Year Awards were presented to Sainergy, Inc., Fine Tec Computer and Ameredia; Corporation of the Year Awards’ winners were Southern California Edison, PG&E and AT&T, and Government Agency of the Year Awards went to Los Angeles World Airports, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Caltrans.
“We take pride in recognizing the continued robust growth and community service shown by Asian American-owned businesses across industries, even in these challenges economic,” said Clyde Wong, USPAACC Western Region President. “We applaud Western Region corporations and government agencies for their commitment to supplier diversity and ensuring equal opportunities for Asian American businesses.”
“This is a great event, full of energy, full of curiosity and forward thinking business owners. I am so glad to be here all day today. It is time well spent”, Vanna Truong, Vice President, Business Development Officer, Wells Fargo.
“As usual, USPAACC hit the ball out of the pock park. We have qualified Asian American businesses here that are ready, willing and capable to do business with major corporations and their second tier vendors. AT&T is just delighted to be a part of this event and we look forward to more collaboration”, Marianne Strobel, Executive Director, Supplier Diversity, AT&T.
“I second the Chinese adage ‘When you drink the water, remember the source’. We actively stand on the shoulders of many folks who worked before us in the supplier diversity arena. Here USPAACC has done a wonderful job of educating, training and creating business opportunities for Asian American suppliers and I am delighted to be associated with them”, David Chen, Ph.D., Deputy Procurement Manager, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
“The Award is great, but we all share in it. Because we are here to help you, and make it worth it and of true value to you! That is why I got up this morning, put on a nice suit and drove 2.5 hours to come to this event and I am just delighted to be here,” Robert Padilla, Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Program Manager, Caltrans.
“My congratulations on behalf of SBA San Francisco District Office for all the hard work put into last night’s event. It was truly a team effort that led to raves from the participants. Corporate sponsors, organizations, & attendees praised USPAACC for giving them the opportunity to make true connections with quality people”, Edwin Joe, Staff Counsel and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney, SBA San Francisco District Office.
Wells Fargo, AT&T, Kaiser Permanente, Ameredia, Sugar Bowl Bakery, The Coca-Cola Company, ITSource Technology, Metropolitan Transportation Commission and Teruko Weinberg sponsored the event.
During “Access to Capital: Do’s and Don’ts” speakers from Wells Fargo, Bank of America, East West Bank, Technology Credit Union, Opportunity Fund and SBA San Francisco District Office provided lively yet substantive workshop on where and how to obtain working and investment capital at this challenging economic time. They all shared some common threads of wisdom but each had their own signature trademark representing the individual organizations’ specialties. All talked about getting prepared, doing your homework, paying your taxes, having a good financial plan, a good CPA and a good relationship with the banker. Distinctions between services of a credit union, community development fund and a traditional bank were drawn clearly for the participants who now are wiser and armed with more information to make their financial decisions to borrow, to invest, and identify the right professional help.
At “Unlocking Doors to Business Opportunities with Large Corporations and Government Agencies” AT&T gave a very clear and concise picture of what it takes to do business with a major corporation, how they select vendors, especially the small ones, and their contract cycle. SBA’s description of the 8(a) business development program, and Minority Business Development Agency’s (MBDA) offer of assistance to small and minority business at their centers around the country provided not only start-ups but ongoing businesses with resources that are mostly free which is a valuable opportunity for the participants especially at this time of the economy. Boeing’s description of a Mentor Protégé program, how it looks and works from a perspective of a corporation was not only an eye opener but a lesson for small businesses to learn. Caltrans’ open invitation to the audience to call on their office for assistance will surely be taken on with great enthusiasm by the folks present. PG&E described their own procurement system and promises to be responsive to folk who want to do business with them and are prepared to do so by, once again, doing their homework first.
The “Diverse Suppliers Go Green” workshop, presented by PG&E, designed to prepare diverse suppliers to more fully participate in the green economy, provided specifics on how to get started on implementing a green program and become part of the green supply chain.
The corporations present at this Procurement Connections event said the suppliers they met were quality. The suppliers present said they learned a great deal from the workshops on how to access capital, and how to do business with corporations and the government at the federal, state and local level. One of the Chinese American business owners, who had attended many other similarly promoted events, said this was the most substantive one and he wants to come again.

The hearing, entitled “Closing the Gap: Exploring Minority Access to Capital and Contracting Opportunities” was chaired by Senator Mary Landrieu (D-Louisiana). The Committee also included Ranking Member Senator Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) and 17 U.S. Senators.

She recommended creating better programs for small and minority businesses to level the playing field.
“I am honored and privileged to have had the opportunity to speak to the esteemed U.S. Senate Committee on the challenges our members face as they strive to sustain, grow and compete in the mainstream,” said Allen after her testimony. “I am also honored to have lent a voice on behalf of our members, and believe the Committee has heard us—loud and clear—as we go beyond the rhetoric and bring viable solutions that truly help our constituency.”

WASHINGTON, DC | October 12, 2010
The US Pan Asian American Chamber of Commerce Education Foundation (USPAACC) led a delegation of industry leaders, business owners and corporate executives on its 2010 Asia Trade Mission (ATM) to Taipei, Chongqing, Shanghai and Beijing, from September 12 to 22. Wen Chang of Trade Union International and Chester Tong of MSL Express were the co-chairs of the ATM.
The Mission’s theme “Global Strategy for Sustainability: Conserve, Recycle and Renew” focused on sustainable and renewable products, services and processes in these growth markets, plus best practices, and real opportunities with buyers, suppliers and trade partners between U.S.-based companies and businesses in Taiwan and China. The theme emphasized a sense of responsibility toward protecting the environment, and is expected to spawn new business opportunities in resource development, clean energy technologies, and innovation in renewable products and services.
The ATM highlight included a private meeting with Taiwan Vice President Vincent Siew at the Presidential Hall, where he briefed delegates on a landmark bilateral trade agreement with China which came into effect only several days prior to the ATM delegation’s visit. The ATM delegates also had a high-level briefing from officials of Taiwan’s Bureau of Export and Trade on business opportunities there.
In Chongqing, China, the delegates visited the Hewlett Packard (HP China) research plant and learned from the success stories shared by executives from GE, Hisense, Tech-Long and PepsiCo. In Shanghai, the delegates received VIP passes to the World Expo, including visits to the U.S., China and Taiwan pavilions; successful companies such as SIPA, SIDEL, ICG and Alibaba.com also participated in the International CEO Forum and shared their best practices with the delegates.
Beijing was the final stop for the ATM delegates, where they were warmly received by U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Robert Goldberg. A reception was held in their honor at Mr. Goldberg’s residence, and attended by economic officers and trade officers from the U.S. Embassy. At the reception, the delegates met with several Chinese middlemen who help businesses penetrate the Chinese market through their high-level and important connections, as well as in-depth knowledge of the regulatory processes involved in doing business in China.
“The purpose of our 2010 ATM was to ‘plant’ the flag and brand U.S.-based businesses as a major player in increased global trade and commerce,” said USPAACC National President & CEO Susan Au Allen. “We also wanted to highlight this region’s burgeoning marketplace and USPAACC’s role in establishing and strengthening strategic business relationships necessary to create a gateway for increased access to myriad business opportunities in the dynamic markets in China and Taiwan.”
Food and beverage company PepsiCo, with a significant presence in China and Taiwan, was a major part of the delegation, which included a select group of procurement executives and business owners from more than 18 U.S.-based companies. The delegation was also composed of businesses from diverse sectors, such as: shipping, packaging, IT, engineering, environmental consulting, and telecommunications, among others. Global companies with operations in China and Taiwan, which hosted the delegation, included PepsiCo, Hisense, SIPA, MSL Express, Topline, ICG Commerce, and Alibaba.com. Other participating corporations in Asia included Cisco, ConAgra Foods, Dase-Sing Group, GE, Hewlett Packard (HP China) and Microsoft.
ATM participants had ample opportunities to meet with local businesses, merchants and counterparts both in China and Taiwan. The one-on-one business matchmaking sessions—held in each city and prearranged between the Asian Business delegation and Taiwanese and Chinese suppliers—created increased access to local resources and connections, while establishing and strengthening strategic business relationships to ensure successful and robust economic growth.
“Having such familiarity and established business connections with Taiwan and China were integral elements for USPAACC to seek and explore more business opportunities in these countries,” added Allen. “The mission was successful because it benefited from the local resources of USPAACC members who were also part of the delegation.”
China recently passed Japan to become the world’s 2nd largest economy behind only the United States. After 30 years of economic reform and 9.5% average annual GDP growth, China is transforming itself from “Factory of the world” to the “Market of the world.” With a 1.3 billion consumer market, and with 15 million prospective new consumers born every year, China offers unlimited opportunities for business expansion. Meanwhile, Taiwan, a significant global player in the information technology (IT) and consumer electronics industries, is also poised to become the next major business and economic hub in the region.
